Description:
Dr. Samuel Wheeler, Illinoisan State Historian, will offer an overview of the role played by the state of Illinois in recruiting its citizens for enlistment to fight in the Civil War and the contributions of those soldiers toward winning it. He will then trace the sentiments that followed after the sudden assassination of Springfield’s Lincoln soon after Appomattox, the years of Grand Army of the Republic gatherings, the continued racial sentiments of parts of Illinois and more as he brings us to the point at which Illinois stands more than 150 years since the war between the states ended. Dr. Wheeler will take questions and comments following the presentation. Early arrival is recommended.
